An educational field visit was organized for third-semester students of the Department of Management Sciences and the Department of Economics at the University of Gwadar to the well-known coastal site of Dhoria Chapra. The visit was supervised by faculty members Mirza Ghalib and Mehboob Adil. The primary objective of the field study was to provide students with practical exposure to community storytelling, indigenous and traditional knowledge, and the lifestyle of coastal communities. During the visit, two experienced fishermen, Nakhuda Rasool Bakhsh Kooch and Nakhuda Akbar Rais, shared their valuable experiences with the students. They explained how generations have passed down traditional knowledge through observation, experience, and oral traditions. The fishermen introduced students to traditional fishing practices, including understanding sea waves, predicting weather conditions, identifying fish locations through natural signs, and navigating the sea without the use of modern instruments. They emphasized that these traditional methods are not only an integral part of coastal culture but are also deeply connected to the identity and livelihoods of local communities. The fishermen also highlighted the impact of modern technology, noting that while technological advancements have made fishing easier and more efficient, they have also contributed to a gradual decline in the transmission of traditional knowledge and indigenous wisdom among younger generations. The discussion provided students with an opportunity to understand the importance of maintaining a balance between modernization and the preservation of cultural heritage. Through direct interaction with the local community, students gained practical learning experiences and developed a deeper appreciation for social inclusion and the significance of indigenous knowledge. The field visit also enhanced students’ observational, communication, and analytical skills, while offering them a unique opportunity to better understand the traditions, values, and way of life of coastal communities.
